thinking here, without naming names, something I learned from a discussion list for translators who attend.
Some small publishing house held a regular sort of short "courses" - three hours - which are actually ways to lure young aspiring translators. Among other peculiarities of these meetings, you hear the argument that an Italian may well translate from a foreign language, something with which most of the translators and publishers in general disagrees. Their reasons are probably too cheap: it costs much more than a professional translator native English speaker who knows Italian well, not a beginner Italian chewing a bit 'of English. (The result is not the same? Really?)
Why try to translators from foreign languages? Of course in the world to spread the knowledge of Italian literature. And to clarify this concept, are an example of Marco Polo ...
